In an effort to boost distance
learning, the University of Cape Coast (UCC) is planning to review and
digitise its learning modules by the Centre of Continuing Education.
In view of that, the university, in collaboration with the Distance
Education Students Association of Ghana (DESAG,) is planning to assist
its distance learning education students to launch a new era of learning
with Information Communication Technology (ICT,) by procuring tablets
for all students to facilitate their academic work.
The initiative, which is expected to commence by the next academic
year, is to assist students on the distance learning module to access
all their reading materials and modules anywhere online with their ipad
instead of travelling around the various study centers with large
volumes of modules.
This was made known by the Vice-Chancellor of UCC, Prof. Domwin Dabire Kuupole, during the 47th congregation of 7,948 graduands at the university campus in Cape Coast over the weekend.
He further revealed that the university has also began a new academic
phase by completing the laying of a fibre optic cable throughout the
campus that has been linked up to the faculties, schools and institutes
to enable students register and check their academic data online.
“In the same vein, we will soon complete connecting the centre for
continuing education with fiber optic cable and an e-learning platform
for the delivery of academic programmes to enable the delivery of
post-graduate courses and subsequently undergraduate courses to be
facilitated through the e-learning platform,” he added.
“We are also in the process of integrating all data on distance
students onto the main university, by this feat, it is expected that our
students on distance learning will soon access their academic data
online as well as be able to register their courses, check their results
and access other academic materials electronically,” he further added.
Prof. Kuupole further hinted that starting from the 2014/2015
academic year, the center will open 12 new centres in Axim, Enchi,
Kasoa, Nandom, Lawra, Asankragwa, Bimbilla, Bawku, Dodowa, Navrongo and
Akosombo.
This, he said, is to make access to the learning centres readily close to teachers and public sector workers.
The vice-chancellor appealed to government to make effort to
vigorously promote the growth of universities across the country since
it is the most rewarding investment any nation must give to its people.
Minister of Education, Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, who was the
former Vice-Chancellor of the UCC, charged the students to let
excellence be their hallmark and strive to achieve higher feat in
future.
The outgone Central Regional Minister, Mr. E K T Addo, who described
UCC as the best university in the world, charged the grandaunts and
continuing students to take distance education serious.
