The Tarkwa Nsueam Municipality in 2012 recorded eight maternal deaths as against 15 in 2013.
In the first quarter of 2014, two maternal deaths have already been recorded in the municipality.
In
an interview with the Ghana News Agency, the Municipal Public Health
Nurse, Mrs. Cynthia Baidoo, attributed increase in maternal mortality to
home delivery, delays in arriving at hospitals during labour, refusal
to attend antenatal clinic during pregnancy and unsafe abortion.
She said for pregnant women to have safe delivery they are supposed to visit the antenatal clinic for at least four times.
Mrs.
Baidoo said about 95 percent of the maternal deaths that ended at the
Tarkwa Government Hospital were avoidable and advised pregnant women who
would be referred by any health center to larger hospitals to do so
rather than deliver at home.
She said this year her outfit would
be organizing durbars across the municipality to sensitize women on the
need to attend antenatal clinics.
